Chill out–

Well, actually, what I meant to say is that it’s chilly outside.  Our area had a great weather for the past three days–sunny, warm, pleasant.  Now today it’s cloudy and chilly.  Typical spring weather here in the Pacific Northwest.

Of course, in the Underground where our offices are and down in the tunnels, it’s always on dank side–damp, chilly, dark.  Yep, all those things that go into making a work environment pleasant–NOT.   Sorry, don’t mean to be a downer, but my M’s are playing like they’re on a teeter-totter: up one day, down the next.   I’ve seen them make plays that are state of the art and then kick the baseball like they should be back in T-ball.

How long until football season anyway?

At least the weekend was quiet.   Alexis parked herself out in the sunshine to read JR Ward’s newest book.  She’d been saving it for a day when she could just read  . . . and  read . . . . read.   She started the book Saturday afternoon and finished it early Sunday morning.   Tell me–what is about a guy with a mohawk and purple eyes (sorry, real guys don’t say amythest) that had her in tears???   Sheesh.

She also was happy dancing because she bought tickets to two more concerts this summer–Los Lonely Boys and Keb ‘Mo.    I’ll have to let you know what I think after I hear these guys in person.

Well, back to work.

Memorial Day

color-guard.jpg

I’d like to take today to honor and express my gratitude to all of those men and women who have served our country in the past and continue to do so today.   I also want to acknowledge the sacrfices their families have made, because in their own way, they serve right along beside them.

I do know not all of those who read DJ’s Blog are from the States, but you  have your own family and friends who serve where you live.   A tip of the hat to them as well.

Saying thank you never seems like enough.

Today is a very special day. Yeah, it’s a Thursday. It’s not a holiday. There’s nothing really spectacular about it, unless you are sitting in my chair. Today is my first ever release date! I finally did it! Thirty plus years of dreaming of having a publisher accept something I wrote finally came true.

Thirteen months ago, I’d given up. I’d start something get halfway in then it was gone. Some of it was me. I kept convincing myself that I could never write something that anyone would want to publish. I was no Alexis Morgan. But then, a very determined red head showed up in my head and started telling me her story. When I didn’t immediately open Word and start typing she glared at me and said – “Type!” So I did, fully expecting I’d get halfway into the story and it would be gone, like so many before it. But, it didn’t she kept talking and talking and talking. A week later I had a completed novella – short, yes but finished. I thought about just locking it away on my hard drive, but a couple friends convinced me to submit it. I’d met another author in an online workshop and sent it to her for her opinion. My friends weren’t published – not that I didn’t trust them – just they’d never done it. She said one of her publishers would love it.

So, I submitted it and waited. Six weeks, no response. Eight weeks, nothing, Twelve weeks, still nothing.  Then while checking out of a Biloxi Casino, we’d gotten a free room and actually won some that night, I checked my phone. I had a voice mail. The publisher had called and wanted to publish my little story! WOW! It’s very hard to drive when you are floating, but somehow I managed the hour drive.

Nine months later and the day I never thought would arrive is here. I can’t think of any group of people than the folks here I’d like to spend the day with. I mean I know all of you, you’re my buds! You’ve made me laugh, recommended or created books that I can get lost in and been encouraging about even my early attempts at “photographing” the guys. I know I owe you folks some pictures and I promise I’ll do them soon as things calm down.

What’s up?

I have some questions:

1.  What’s up with the Mariners?   lose 6 win 1 lose more win 2 lose again.   makes my jaw ache from gritting my teeth.
2.  What’s up with the weather?   Two beautiful days and now it’s raining.   It’s never a good thing when the lead story for the news is “how long is this rain going to last this time?
3.  What’s up with Dancing with the Stars?    Psyche!!   Only Alexis really cares about that–she can’t make up her mind whether she wants Gilles or Shawn to win.   Personally, I don’t have an opinion.   Really
4.  What’s up with Alexis blogging about flapdoodle and frippery?   She’s right about one thing–I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing frippery.  Trahern, now–I can see him festooned with all kinds of frippery.   Bane, too.   Cullen, not so much.  Lonzo is sitting too close for me to express an opinion in his case.   (but we all know he’s a frippery kind of guy!)
DJ:     OUCH!  Damn it, Lonzo, that was a joke, as in  J-O-K-E!    You’re definitely a manly man, especially armed are you are with that very sharp sword pointed somewhere in the vicinity of my throat.   Luckily, you have a sense of humor.  No?   Really?   I could’ve sworn you . . . .  [blood-curdling scream here, followed by a loud thump, as if something hit the floor]

LONZO:  Hello, everyone.  Unfortunately DJ has just become incapacitated.    I’m sure he’ll be fine . . . unless of course someone tells Trahern about the whole frippery thing.   Hey, Trahern!   Come here a minute.   We need to talk.  Just step over DJ, but watch out for the blood.    Wouldn’t want you to get bloodstains all over that frippery DJ said you were wearing.    Seriously, I don’t know what he was talking about–you don’t look at all festooned.

TRAHERN:   Sorry, everyone, but Lonzo has just joined his buddy DJ on the floor.   I’m sure DJ will check in with you again later.   How well do you think he’ll be able to workout against me and Devlin wearing a fichu and a hooped skirt?   I’m sure he’ll be proud as punch to share the details with you.    Enjoy your day.   I doubt DJ will.   :-D

We have a winner!

In honor of Strohs getting a  new job, DJ decided she should get a present!   So Strohs, email me your snail mail address and I’ll forward it to Stella so she can send you a copy of CYPRESS NIGHTS.

Congratulations!

Live Long and Prosper . . .

Okay, I admit it.  I’m a Trekkie.   Have been since the first series.   Really liked Next Generation.   Deep Space Nine had its share of moments, especially when it came to Warf.   Voyager, although not my fav, had some of my favorite Q episodes ever.   Even Enterprise had some memorable characters.  I thought the best two were the Vulcan woman and the chief engineer.   The movies have been all over the ballpark, with the one where Kirk and company went back in time to bring back some whales being Alexis’s all time favorite.

Well, at least up until now.   The new movie was one major hoot, from beginning to end.   The casting was impeccable.   The guy who played Spock was dead on, as was Kirk.    Scotty cracked me up big time.   Alexis thought it criminal that they made Eric Bana all but unrecognizable as the Romulan.   Evidently she has a thing for him–no surprise there if you’ve ever seen him in Troy.   Or at least that’s what she tells me.   However, my personal favorite was Karl Urban’s portrayal of Dr. McCoy (Bones.)    He stole every scene he was in as far as I was concerned.

Don’t want to include any spoilers, so I’ll just say that I personally give the movie two thumbs up.

A New Contest–Welcome to CYPRESS NIGHTS!

cypress-nights.jpg

I thought I’d get everybody’s week off to a great start by offering a new contest.   One of the biggest blessings in my career has been  getting to know other writers.   I met Stella Cameron when I was first starting out close to twenty years ago.   She’s always stood out of the crowd with her generous support of others and willingness to share her insightful take on this crazy business of ours.   We got to spend some time together at the Romance Extravaganza we both participated in last weekend.  Along the way, we decided to trade off giving away one of our books on each other’s websites.    So on that note, I will be giving away an autographed copy of Stella’s book, Cypress Nights.   Here’s the story description:

Roche Savage is a talented psychiatrist with an insatiable—some might say kinky—sex drive. He’s always avoided gentle, reserved women because he knows that if he loses control… Unfortunately, he spies reticent Bleu Labeau, a young widow who has come to Toussaint to start a new school—Bleu, who was taught that sex is dirty, wrong and best performed in the dark.

The school has unleashed another passion, as well. When bodies start turning up, the local sheriff and the townspeople must fend for themselves. Taking the lead, Roche and Bleu race to unravel the mystery. But when it’s revealed that all the victims are former patients of Roche, speculation arises that the people of Toussaint may not be looking for a stranger, but one of their own.

Blade Envy

wolverine.jpg

Okay, I think we can all agree that a Paladin can swing a mean blade.  We know swords.  And we know axes.  Well, throwing hammers, too, but that last one isn’t really pertinent to this discussion.   But right now, I’m feeling a wee bit envious of someone else’s prowess with blades.   Okay, a whole lot envious–I’d describe me as pea green about now, not to mention pretty damn grumpy.

Just who is this paragon of blade ability, you may ask.   And I may answer.   Okay, I will answer.

Wolverine.

Yep, Alexis dragged me to her favorite movie theater last Friday night to see the premier of Origin, the new X-Men movie.   She loved it.  In fact, she was wishing they’d had the DVD already available in the lobby so she could by a copy so she could watch it over and over and over again at home.  Geez.  Yeah, it was good, and explained a lot of the mystery about Logan, but she could show some sensitivity.   I’m just a mortal man (well, not exactly, but a lot closer than Wolverine is), and I sure as heck don’t have handy, permanently sharp blades that pop out the instant I need them.

She kept trying to reassure me that Wolverine isn’t real, that he just a character in a movie.   Well, that’s like saying I’m not real, that I’m just a character  in a book.  How much sense does that make?

Anyway, all of that aside, we both loved the movie, lots of action, lots of cool cinematography.  The special effects were well done as well.   It will come as no surprise that  Alexis is kind of hoping her friend will ask her to go later this week so she can see it again.

Hope you all had a great weekend.  Alexis was part of that Romance Extravaganza thing at the library.  She had a great time and got to meet some new fans in person.   She had a big poster of Jarvis’s cover at her table when she was autographing books.   I guess it was admired by a lot of the people who came, and she had several offers from friends to see to it that Jarvis got a good home.   Rather than play favorites, she brought it back home.   Great, now I get to look at it.   Like I said, damn grumpy.

Brenda Novak’s online auction for Juvenile Diabetes

Alexis here-

I don’t know if all of you have heard about Brenda’s annual auction to raise money for juvenile diabetes research, a cause that is near and dear to her heart.   The auction has grown every year and a lot of folks have donated cool stuff–books, jewelry, manuscript critiques, goody baskets, etc.

If you’re curious, I donated an autographed set of all five Paladin books.    Anyway, here’s the link and I  hope you’ll go take a peek.
